SS-31, also written as elamipretide or MTP-131, is a four amino acid peptide that concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is one of the few compounds in this category that reached late stage clinical trials under a pharmaceutical developer, so the evidence base is better documented than most of what sits next to it on a shelf.

What SS-31 Is

Its defining property is where it goes. SS-31 carries an alternating charge pattern that drives accumulation in the inner mitochondrial membrane at concentrations far above the surrounding cytosol, and it does this without depending on the membrane potential. That matters, because a damaged mitochondrion with a collapsed potential is exactly the one you would want to reach.

Once there it associates with cardiolipin, a phospholipid unique to that membrane and central to how the electron transport chain is organised. Cardiolipin damage is a common feature of mitochondrial dysfunction, and SS-31 research is largely built around that observation.

Reconstitution and Handling

Supplied lyophilised, with bacteriostatic water in the box. Reconstitution is done by the buyer, and the volume you choose determines the concentration you end up with. There is no single correct volume, only the one that makes your intended measurement easy to read on the syringe you are using.

• Let the vial reach room temperature before you open it.
• Wipe the stopper with an alcohol swab and let it dry.
• Run the bacteriostatic water slowly down the inside wall of the vial rather than straight onto the powder.
• Swirl gently until clear. Do not shake.
• Label the vial with the date and the concentration. You will not remember it in three weeks.

Storage

• Ships lyophilised and is stable at room temperature in transit.
• Refrigerate on arrival and keep out of direct light.

• Once reconstituted, keep refrigerated and treat it as a short shelf life rather than an indefinite one.
